EAB Tip Of The Month: Ventilation Strategies During COVID-19

Effective Ventilation and HVAC Systems During COVID-19

With all of the news in the past year related to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a lot of information (some true and some false) distributed regarding ventilation effectiveness and the HVAC system’s ability to help maintain a clean and safe environment for building occupants.

While some have argued that high efficiency filtration and one hundred percent ventilation are the keys to a healthy building, especially during a pandemic, these solutions are usually not applicable to most commercial buildings throughout North America due to climate factors, occupant loads and energy costs.

How to Improve Filtration and Overall Ventilation

With that said, there are strategies that can be taken to help improve filtration and overall ventilation that research has shown to help improve the interior environment overall and especially during a pandemic.

The ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force has published a number of resources for building owners and operators. The Building Readiness Team (of which Justin Garner was a member) outlines a holistic approach to increasing filtration and ventilation by engaging a technical team that includes a skilled TAB Firm and Commissioning Provider.

COVID-19: Keeping Everything In Balance Podcast

Our very own Justin Garner appeared on The Percussive Maintenance Podcast to discuss the role testing, adjusting, and balancing plays in the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the main topics discussed is if COVID-19 can be spread through the air. Listen to it here.

How We Can Help!

We feel honored to have the opportunity to help various clients from the healthcare industry to K-12 school districts evaluate and adjust their facilities to help improve ventilation to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
